Mr. Vinod H. Nargund PhD MS FRCS (Urol) FEBU
Mr Vinod Nargund is a Consultant Urological Surgeon who specialises in Urological cancer, male sexual and fertility problems. He was trained in Urology Units at City Hospital Belfast, Royal Infirmary Bradford and Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford. He was appointed as Consultant Urological Surgeon to St Bartholomew’s and Homerton Hospitals in 1997 and was lead Urological cancer surgeon and chairman of multidisciplinary Uro-oncological team between 2001 and 2010. Prior to his current appointment he was Honorary Senior Registrar / Lecturer in Surgery in Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust and University of Oxford. He was trained in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery at Erasme University Hospital, Brussels and Oscar Lambret Cancer Centre at Lille, France. He spent sabbatical at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York for advancement of GU Cancer training in 1997. He is also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching. He has been undergraduate and postgraduate examiner for the University of London and served as member of court of examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is also actively involved in training general practitioners in urology for City and Hackney PCT and East London Consortium. He received PhD for his work on bladder cancer research.
In addition to general urology his expertise includes management of urological cancers (prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, testis and penis) and male health problems. His special interests are in the fields of diseases of kidneys and testes, in particular their cancers and lymph node surgery (testis, melanoma and prostate). Vinod is specialised in laparoscopic and complex procedures related to kidney and testis. With regard to kidney cancers Vinod’s expertise includes nephron-saving surgery (partial nephrectomy) and in conjunction with his radiology colleagues radiofrequency ablation and cryosurgery. He has also contributed in minimally invasive procedures for malignant melanoma. Vinod along with Professor Tim Oliver pioneered the technique of testis conservation surgery for selected cases of testicular cancer (testis saving surgery or partial orchidectomy). In addition he also deals with other testicular problems such as male infertility, recanalization of vas and surgical sperm aspiration procedures (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration-PESA, testicular sperm aspiration-TESA and testicular sperm extraction- TESE) and testicular biopsy. Vinod has edited urological oncology published in 2007-8 and now in its 2nd edition. He is also the principal editor of urological oncology for nurses (1st edition). In general urology he has special interest in urinary tract infections, catheter management and prostatitis.
