PREMATURE EJACULATION (PE)
Although PE is considered as one of the commonest male sexual problems it is often an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. It affects nearly 30% of the male population. The diagnosis of PE is based on the criteria given by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR). The criteria include the characteristics of shortened intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), ejaculation before the man wishes it, distress, and interpersonal difficulty related to the ejaculatory latency. PE is self-reported and therefore history is important in understanding the condition for each patient. Most PE patients shy away from doctors because of embarrassment and hesitate to seek medical advice.
Currently it is thought that PE may be associated with factors such as nerve transmission. As such no medication is approved for its treatment. However there are medications to prolong IELT which essentially increase sense of control and sexual satisfaction for men with PE.
